What type of learner am I?

what type of learner am I

Ever wondered what type of learner you are?

Whether you’re preparing for exams, learning new skills, or simply trying to grasp complex concepts, identifying your learning style can make the process of developing your knowledge smoother and more enjoyable.

Here’s everything you need to know about learning styles, along with a quiz to help you figure out what type of learner you are:

What are learning styles?

A learning style is the way in which a person prefers to learn.

This could be through spending time reading about a subject, carrying out in-depth analysis, trying out new ideas or theories, or diving in and having a go straight away.

One of the most popular ways of classifying these learning styles was created by Honey and Mumford. Their theory divides learners into four types; Activists, Reflectors, Theorists, and Pragmatists.

Here’s what each one means, and how they’re characterised:

Learning styles: Explained

Activist learning style

What is an activist learner? Activist learners enjoy learning by doing, fully involving themselves in their studies. They prefer hands-on, practical experiences, and take a trial and error approach to studying.

Their favourite way to learn: Because activist learners like to be actively involved in their studies, solitary distance learning isn’t usually the best method for them. Instead they benefit from collaborative learning, either in a classroom setting, or through teaming up with a study buddy.

Their favourite phrase: ‘Let’s give it a go.’

Reflective learning style

What is a reflective learner? Reflective learners like to observe, considering a range of perspectives during their studies. They then assess their findings from every angle before coming to a conclusion.

Their favourite way to learn: Through thoughtful observation and introspection, preferring to review notes, contemplate concepts, and connect new knowledge to existing understanding in a quiet and solitary environment. This makes self-paced, online or distance learning an ideal method for reflective learners.

Their favourite phrase: ‘Let me think about it.’

Theorist learning style

What is a theorist learner? A theorist learner focuses on underlying principles, analysing concepts, and fitting them into logical frameworks. They thrive on systematic planning, rational thinking, and exploring the “why” behind ideas.

Their favourite way to learn: As theorist learners like to learn through structured and in-depth analysis of theories, lecture-based courses, research-focused projects, case studies, as well as subjects that require critical thinking and logical reasoning are usually favoured.

Their favourite phrase: ‘What’s the theory behind this?’

Pragmatic learning style

What is a pragmatic learner? A pragmatic learner prefers practical, hands-on experience and values learning through real-world application rather than theoretical exploration.

Their favourite way to learn: As they learn best by doing, pragmatic learners often seek out opportunities to practically develop and utilise their skills. This means they thrive in environments that offer concrete examples, simulations, such as internships, apprenticeships, or courses with work placements or job guarantees.

Their favourite phrase: ‘How does this work in practice?’

Why do I need to know my learning style?

Your learning style will heavily influence the study method and type of course you choose.

For example, one type could benefit most from a distance learning course, whilst another may get the most out of classroom learning or courses with practical work placements.

To find out what type of learner you are and what type of course is right for you, take the below quiz.
