Jobs boom: Vacancies posted at their highest levels in over a decade

Ready to find your dream job? 2021 could actually be your year…

As a result of lockdown restrictions easing across the country, the jobs market is continuing to show strong signs of recovery. In fact, we’ve seen the number of jobs posted on reed.co.uk pointing towards an economic upturn.

Here’s everything you need to know about the current jobs boom – and why now is the perfect time to start thinking about finding a new role on reed.co.uk.

Jobs added in May highest in over a decade

Over 275,000 new jobs went live on reed.co.uk in May – a 26% increase month-on-month and a 237% increase year-on-year.

That made May 2021 our best month for job postings since February 2008 – shortly before the last financial crash hit businesses across the UK.

Not only does this indicate that businesses are resuming hiring as we start to navigate the ‘new normal’ of life post-pandemic, it also suggests that the labour market is beginning to move from a buyer’s market to a seller’s market. In many sectors, there will be more vacancies than candidates available. Meaning the power will shift to candidates and in turn lead – many are suggesting – to increased salaries and more opportunities for jobseekers to negotiate terms to suit them.

Jobs boom is a nationwide trend

51,700 jobs were posted in London during May, the highest out of any region in the UK. Job postings in London are up over 300% year-on-year – indicating just how badly the capital’s labour market was hit by the pandemic, but also how energetically it’s bounced back. For this reason, now is the perfect time to find work in London

But it isn’t just the capital reaping the benefits of the economic recovery.

All regions saw monthly increases for jobs posted in May, with opportunities in the East Midlands and the East of England particularly impressing (increasing by 163% and 26% respectively). So no matter where you’re based, there’s something out there to suit you.

Hospitality isn’t the only sector on the rise

With restrictions lifting to allow pubs and restaurants to serve customers inside from May 17th, it’s no surprise that hospitality and catering staff have seen a huge increase in demand – with hospitality vacancies up 37% month-on-month.  However, this wasn’t actually the sector that saw the highest amount of growth.

Jobs posted in the transport and logistics sector rose by a staggering 261% month-on-month, with 43,600 new jobs added in May alone. Other sectors that saw significant increases included retail (up 55%) banking (up 40%) and customer service (up 37%).
