What do they do?

Is your CV spotless? Looking for a job that is too? You should be a Housekeeper…

Working primarily in commercial establishments (such as hotels or residential homes), or less commonly in private households, Housekeepers take charge of all aspects of a building to ensure a clean, comfortable and tidy environment is maintained at all times.

Typical duties for a Housekeeper could include:

  • Recruiting and supervising members of the cleaning staff
  • Drawing up shift patterns and working out rotas
  • Regularly inspecting rooms to ensure that they are well maintained
  • Reporting any faults and organising repairs
  • Managing the household budget
Is it right for me?

To become a Housekeeper, a good work ethic and a meticulous attention to detail will be absolutely essential.

You must have high standards, as these will be the benchmark by which all work is measured. Although the job can be very hands-on at times, there will often be a degree of facilities management involved, making organisation skills similarly essential.

A complete immunity to all commercially available cleaning products is not vital, but may be a distinct advantage.

Other key skills include:

  • Motivational and man-management skills
  • The ability to stay calm in times of crisis
  • Financial acumen
  • Objectivity
  • Excellent communication skills

What's it really like?

Working in the hospitality industry can be demanding at times, and being a Housekeeper is no exception. I've worked as a Senior Housekeeper in a large hotel for the last three years, and there’s a lot of pressure. However, if you’re willing to work hard and know exactly what you want out of your staff, it can be a rewarding role. If, like me, you’re obsessive when it comes to cleanliness, there probably isn't a better suited role.

Get qualified

You will generally not need a degree to become a Housekeeper. However, work within a similar role in the hospitality industry and a professional qualification relevant to the subject could help set you apart.
