What do they do?

Want to go places in your job? You should become a delivery driver…

A delivery driver is responsible for collecting goods and parcels and safely delivering them to customers. Delivery drivers can be employed directly by a company to solely deliver their orders, or they might be self-employed and deliver goods from different companies.

The types of parcels a delivery driver delivers will also vary. It could be food and drink, small items like gifts, books or games, or larger items like TVs or fridges. But the good news is that more and more people are choosing to shop online, so there’s a continuous need for good delivery drivers.

Tasks may vary depending on the company you work for, but typical duties of a delivery driver include:

  • Collecting goods from a warehouse, store, restaurant or pick up point
  • Organising delivery routes
  • Arranging parcels in the vehicle according to the delivery schedule
  • Sending messages to customers and updating the tracking system
  • Making deliveries and drop offs, in the safest possible way
  • Returning undelivered parcels or unwanted goods
Is it right for me?

While no formal experience or qualifications are needed to become a delivery driver, you are required to hold a full driving licence for the type of vehicle you’ll be using to make deliveries. Also, employers may require you to have a good driving record, e.g. no outstanding fines.

As most of your day will be spent on the road, it’s essential you’re comfortable driving on different types of roads, and that you can navigate routes. And as many delivery drivers are self-employed, the ability to manage your own schedule effectively is a necessity.

Other skills for a delivery driver include:

  • Time management
  • Customer service skills
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work at pace and at time under pressure
  • Great attention to detail
  • Ability to work well with others
