The opportunity: We have an exciting opportunity for an Underwriter to join our Legal Expenses team here in our Croydon office. Working hybrid, (2 days in the office/3 days from home), the role works closely with other Underwriters and as a member of the wider BTE team. Our friendly and long standing team consist of 6 others, which include Senior Underwriters, Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters to work alongside. Our clients are our distribution partners comprising of insurance brokers, trade & affinity groups, insurers and professional organisations who sell and distribute our products and services to their clients and members. What you’ll be doing: Develop and maintain good relationships internally and externally Responsible for underwriting new and renewal business, via Schemes (Delegated and Master Policy) and Standalone LEI risks, in accordance with own personal level of underwriting authority. Provide and maintain a good level of underwriting, demonstrate a thorough knowledge of company guidelines and authority levels, in order to achieve growth and profitability objectives Creation and management of policy documentation, including specific wordings and contractual agreements with business partners Provide an excellent underwriting service to our brokers whether emanating from broker e-trading platforms, or by email, phone and/or client meetings as appropriate to the task to ensure objectives are achieved and deadlines are met Diarise and follow up quotes with brokers with the purpose of winning business Ensure incoming calls to the team are answered and actioned promptly and professionally Manage new cases working as appropriate with the broker to secure Work closely with other company departments in particular claims, sales, credit control/finance and actuarial Our must haves: Previous commercial underwriting experience, being familiar with standalone and preferably portfolio underwriting Be comfortable with front sheet completion and peer review processes Ideally have experience of trading in Legal Expenses Insurance either from working with an Insurance Company or Insurance Broker Have excellent customer services skills Good Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel, and Outlook and must become fully competent with our in-house systems Have excellent written and oral communication skills Strong analytical skills Who we are: Markel Corporation (NYSE - MKL) a Fortune 500 company with over 60 offices in 20+ countries, is a holding company for insurance, reinsurance, specialist advisory and investment operations around the world.
