Senior Materials Engineer/ Scientist - testing Type: Permanent Location: Chester area (hybrid working available). Salary: £40,000 - £60,000 (depending on experience) Additional: Enhanced package includes (but not limited to); 8% pension contribution, 10% annual bonus (depending on company performance), 25 days AL + BH (increasing x1 day every 3 years of service), private medical (or cash equivalent), life assurance plan (or cash equivalent) etc.Our client, a global instrumentation (innovation) provider and solution/s testing - consultancy are looking to appoint a Snr Mat Scientist (SMS). The SMS will be based at their Chester site BUT they company also offer a hybrid working structure - making this position very attractive to an experience Consultant (Mat Scientist) in industry and/ or research (PhD lead). **Reporting to the Operations Manager (Forensics) the SMS will:• Deliver of forensic and failure investigations and testing for a wide range of assets with a specific focus on materials. • Be responsible for dealing with the initial customer contact through to delivery and reporting. This role combines office-based projects with hands-on practical laboratory delivery and customer focused activities. The output of projects enables customers to manage their assets effectively and safely.• The role will take the lead in the daily materials laboratory (project lead role) operations and organization with a view of continual improvement, customer growth and relationship building and assisting in creating additional growth opportunities and potential in the material-based disciplines.Main Duties:-• Providing expert opinion on material-based works across the Forensics business • Project delivery activities.• Contribute to continuous improvements across the Forensics business.• Delivery of forensic and failure investigations related to the analysis and mechanical testing of materials & components. Primarily this is focused towards assets of the electrical power industry (overhead line conductors, pylon towers, ceramic insulators, catenary systems, etc) but may also be focused towards assets outside the electrical power industry.• Example tests:oAnalysis of fracture surfaces of metallic componentsoAnalysis of voids and defects (ambers, electrical / water trees, mechanical stresses) in polymeric electrical insulationoAnalysis of corrosion and porosity in metalsoAssessment of protective coatings and paintsoTensile and sheer strength testing of materialsoDimensioning of components / materialsoAnalysis of material makeup and identification of foreign bodies within materials.• The types of analytical facilities that you will lead, will include:oScanning Electron Microscope / EDXAoFourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR)oOptical Microscopy (Hi Magnification and Low Magnification)o250kN and 30kN tensile test facilitiesoShaw and Vickers Hardness test facilitiesoShear Strength Test FacilitiesoSalt / Clean Fog Ageing Facilities• The work may also involve liaising with subcontractors and organizations for investigations in which the Client do not have the required facilities in houseThe Person: • Will hold a degree in materials science, forensic engineering or equivalent• The ideal Candidate will have experience in commercial testing/ industry testing (forensic testing), but PhD Materials Science Researchers with significant experience will also be considered. • The individual should have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of material-based analysis, fractography, microstructural analysis and material make up.• The individual should have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the tools required to deliver material-based assessments, including use and upkeep of SEM, Optical Microscopes,• FTIR, Material preparation equipment etc. Expert knowledge in chemical use for etching sample surfaces.• Excellent experience in report writing/ case study analysis and reporting projects.
