An established and growing company within the medical diagnostics industry is seeking a Lead Scientist to join their UK-based research and development team. This role involves leading the technical development of innovative molecular diagnostic products in a highly regulated environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing next-generation point-of-care diagnostic assays, leading a small team of scientists, and managing projects from concept through to design transfer. Key Responsibilities Lead technical development for multiple R&D projects across the organisation. Line-manage a team of 2-3 assay development scientists. Design and execute complex experimental plans and review data for accuracy and quality. Develop technical strategies for assay optimisation using DOE and robust design principles. Act as a subject matter expert in experimental design and statistical analysis. Create and maintain technical documentation compliant with regulatory and quality standards (e.g., ISO 13485, ISO 14971). Ensure all activities meet internal quality and compliance requirements. Produce technical reports and contribute to product design decisions. Promote high standards of laboratory practice and scientific rigor. Skills & Experience - Essential BSc with 7+ years or MSc/PhD with 5+ years of experience in molecular diagnostics or IVD development. Industrial experience developing NAAT-based assays (e.g., PCR, LAMP). Strong understanding of Design Control within a regulated framework (ISO 13485). Experience with risk management activities (ISO 14971). Proficiency in analysing and interpreting complex datasets. Track record in technical project management within a laboratory-based environment. Excellent communication and leadership skills. Skills & Experience - Desirable Advanced knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE) and robust design principles. Experience with Minitab, JMP, MATLAB, Python, R, or similar tools. Lean Six Sigma certification or equivalent. Prior experience with design verification, validation, and design transfer. Experience working within Quality Management Systems in a regulated diagnostics environment. ­­

We are using our proprietary Biomimetic Glucose Binding Molecules (GBM) to develop a new glucose sensor chemistry that will enable market-leading Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM). Our technology is based on over 20 years of cutting-edge research, pioneered by Professor Anthony Davis’ group at the University of Bristol (see: Davis et al., Nature Chemistry, 11, 52-56, 2018). Carbometrics’ goal is to exploit our GBM technology to realise a highly robust and accurate glucose sensing platform that can be used to create a market-leading Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) solution. About the role The successful candidate will work as part of the scientific team to support the research and development of Carbometrics technology. We are looking for someone to join the team who has some experience of working in a synthetic materials science, particles, polymer or hydrogel coatings laboratory. To thrive in this role, the successful candidate will have specific experience in functional materials science and experience with incorporating these materials into emulsion phase hydrogel formulations and coating thin films onto a variety of surfaces using multiple techniques. The candidate should also be hands-on and able to work independently, adaptable to ideas and change, resourceful and self-motivated. There is also opportunity to be involved in fabrication and analysis of sensor prototypes incorporating in-house prepared materials, particles and/or polymers. Skills & Experience Essential: • Excellent numeracy, literacy, and computer skills.• Proficiency in key MS Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint).• Ability to work independently with good problem-solving skills.• Significant experience of working in a practical laboratory in academia and/or industry• Expertise in the design, synthesis, characterisation and application of functional materials, polymers, and/or particles (e.g. nano/micro phosphorescent particles, hydrogels etc).• Experience with emulsion properties of particles in solution and how to stabilise emulsions to avoid aggregation, precipitation or settling of particle (e.g. controlling viscosity, additives etc).• Experience with advanced coating and film forming techniques (dip/spin-coating, inkjet printing etc) and characterisation of film properties (e.g. layer thickness, uniformity, adhesion etc).
