Tyre Fitter - Workshop Assistant

Vehicles play a major part in policing and GMP and its partner, Manchester City Council (MCC), we maintain over 2000 vehicles with a diverse fleet from scooters to HGV. These vehicles all need to repaired, maintained and cleaned on a regular basis. GMP and MCC technicians carry out all this work at our purpose built facility in Openshaw.

The purpose of this post is to provide a full tyre maintenance service to vehicles which will include inspecting, removing and replacing tyres in the correct manner ensuring that you follow manufacturer and health & safety guidelines.

You will provide assistance to the technicians with heavy or dual person manual handling tasks. You will undertake repairs of minor defects on police vehicles, such as the replacement of light bulbs, wiper blades, batteries etc. There will be a range of driving duties to carry out, collection and delivery for maintenance purposes.

It is essential to the role that you hold a full driving licence so that you can carry out maintenance tasks, a NVQ certificate in Vehicle Fitting Operations (Specialist Tyre Fitting) NVQ Level 2 accredited by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) or equivalent.

You will be required to undergo any training which relates to the routine maintenance and repair of vehicles. A good knowledge of various methods and the use of equipment in tyre changing, wheel balancing and steering geometry checks.

We are looking for someone who is physically fit and capable of bending, stretching and manual handling operations. Although most of the work is based in the vehicle workshop and tyre bays there will be an element of working outside changing wheels as and when required.
