Community Engagement Officer
  • Salary: £29.46 PAYE / £37.75 LTD UMB per hour
  • Location: London SE1
  • Job Type: Full-time, Temporary (6-12 months), Hybrid

We are seeking an experienced Community Engagement Officer to join the fire and rescue service for London. This role is crucial for delivering community engagement with a wide range of stakeholders and communities affected by proposals on the future of the fire and rescue service in London. The position is for a minimum of 6 months, with the potential to be extended to 12 months, and offers an immediate start.

Day to Day of the role:
  • Engage with communities and stakeholders affected by proposals on the future of the fire and rescue service in London.
  • Respond to significant fires and other emergencies by working with community representatives and partner agencies.
  • Represent the fire and rescue service at external community meetings and build relationships with key community stakeholders.
  • Support the Community Engagement Manager in advising internal audiences on stakeholder and community engagement matters.
  • Contribute to the communications department’s success by participating in the delivery of the departmental plan.
  • Liaise with partner agencies, including other emergency services and the Mayor’s team, to deliver high-quality community engagement.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience within a large complex organisation serving a diverse community.
  • Proven track record of building strong community engagement relationships.
  • Experience in delivering effective public consultation exercises and working with hard-to-reach groups.
  • Ability to engage swiftly with communities in the context of public and emergency services.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage with community groups in challenging circumstances.
  • Good organisational skills to manage workloads and meet key performance measures.
  • Numerical and analytical skills for monitoring budgets and contracts and providing data analysis.
  • Knowledge of the fire and rescue service and an understanding of safeguarding issues.
  • Familiarity with the law relating to publicity, including the Local Government Publicity Code, Data Protection, Freedom of Information, and the Government’s Code of Practice on Publicity.
