Scientific Project Officer

  • Annual Salary: £26.5K - £35K, dependent on experience

Our client is seeking a Science Project Officer to support their crop improvement activities in Africa and India. This role is integral to the progression of collaborative legume crop research programmes and offers the opportunity to contribute to impactful scientific projects.

Day to Day of the Role:

  • Process crop improvement project proposals and liaise with scientific consultants to provide feedback to grantees.
  • Negotiate grant agreements and extensions, ensuring adherence to project timelines and objectives.
  • Monitor project payments and reporting schedules, maintaining financial diligence.
  • Manage travel arrangements and event logistics, including:
    • Travel to Africa and India to support annual meetings and project audits, likely one to three times a year for up to two weeks at a time (or up to 4-5 weeks yearly).
    • Organise remote video conferencing workshops and meetings.
  • Maintain meticulous project files and database records, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Science graduate, ideally MSc level or above in genetics, plant science, biotechnology, molecular science, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of two years of proven administrative experience.
  • Ability to travel internationally to Africa and India as required.
  • Eagerness to learn about modern methods of plant breeding.
  • Proficient IT skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Well-organised, methodical, and detail-oriented.

Desirable:

  • Experience using database packages.
  • Experience analysing research budgets.
  • Language translation skills, particularly in French, are advantageous but not limited to West Africa.
