As a production fermentation scientist as part of a global organisation on a plant site, the primary focus of the role will be dedicated to improving fermentation yields. As fermentation scientist you will work in a range of environments from laboratory through to production.

As an experienced manufacturing production microbiologist or fermentation scientist you will assist with programs for strain improvement using natural diversity and molecular methods and develop new and improve existing formulations and optimise and improve of existing fermentations and downstream processing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operating and maintaining various types of equipment in production and utilities, including vessels, centrifuges, ?lters, boilers, compressors, generators, chillers, and ef?uent holding tanks.
  • To prepare, sterilize and set up inoculation and fermentation vessels and complete vessel transfers.
  • Ensuring necessary checks are done in the inoculation and cooking process.
  • Troubleshooting equipment and process issues and ensure escalated as appropriate and conduct necessary process equipment maintenance e.g. cleaning and changing ?lters.
  • Support the Fermentation Supervisor in operational tasks.

Qualifications and Skills.

  • Background in Biological sciences, Bioengineering, Bioprocess engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology.
  • Experience of microbiological / fermentation culture in a commercial environment would be advantageous.
  • Experience in a manufacturing / production environment
  • Mechanical aptitude and a good understanding of production machinery/equipment and requirements for operating and maintaining them e.g. pumps, mixers, valves etc.
  • Knowledge and implementation of Lean/modern manufacturing principles is an advantage.
  • Ability to work accurately and quickly in a time target pressured environment without close supervision.
  • Following written procedures, safety compliance and demonstrating good attention to detail.
