About the Role:

The Life & Health Protection Underwriter reports to the Head of Underwriting Operations and is responsible for providing Customer Service to our Adviser Partners and Policyholders to support Guardian's Customer Service proposition to achieve the target business outcomes, including:

  • Effective and prudent assessment of risks that are processed within the operational underwriting
  • Provide thorough and robust justifications of decisions and refer cases to third parties including CMO and re- assurers
  • Be able to communicate well both verbally and in writing to give clear instruction & reasons for decisions
  • Manage customer expectations and portray Guardian's high standards and underwriting services
  • Point of contact for Customer Services team and distribution teams
  • Provide retrospective underwriting of cases for the claims area and claims committee
  • Ensuring Guardian's Customer Services proposition for both advisers and customers is delivered ensuring that the quality of our services continues to meet and be recognised for leading the market
  • Manage own time and workloads to meet internal Service Level Agreements and quality standards
  • Develop and maintain relationships across the department and the business ensuring a cohesive working environment for everyone
  • Driving efficiency improvements to reduce cost required to service new business and in-force book, including internal initiatives within the team as well as supporting cross-company projects
  • Maintain own personal knowledge using resources available - Terms and Conditions, Website, Standard Operating Procedures and Training
  • Challenge processes where efficiencies can be realised for the team
  • Incorporating & ensuring adherence to the FCA's 'Treating Customers Fairly" consumer & conduct risk requirements
  • Identify, report, and escalate areas of risk/ potential suspicious activity
  • Identify vulnerable Customers and adapt behaviours accordingly

  • Experience in Life & Health Protection Underwriting and customer services
  • Ability to work with colleagues at all levels and with external parties
  • Ability to identify various Customer types and adapt accordingly
  • Complaint management
  • Stakeholder management; internal and external
  • Objection handling; internal and external
  • Ability to manage own time and work priorities

Objectives:

  • Operate within authority levels agreed by the Head of Technical Underwriting
  • Meeting agreed Service Levels for Underwriting tasks
  • Meeting agreed quality standards, including QA, complaints, and breaches

Compliance:

  • Incorporating & ensuring personal adherence to the FCA's ''Treating Customers Fairly" consumer & conduct risk requirements
  • Completion of all mandatory compliance training
