There are all sorts of things inside those big 20 foot metal containers that ships transport. It could be toys that are imported from China; or raw materials that are going to a factory; or goods that have been made in the UK and are being sold abroad.

In fact, most of the goods that come in and out of different countries are transported by sea.

If something happens, and that cargo is damaged or lost, or if the ship breaks down or runs aground, then a lot of people are going to lose out.

It’s not straightforward dealing with the fall out, and the resulting claims for compensation from Insurance companies. But that is what this business specialises in.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

You’ll be working on a range of big cases; some may even be on the news (remember the ship that blocked the Suez Canal for 6 days? Well, that caused a LOT of problems).

There are two sides: one who is at fault for what happened, and the other who has lost out. You will be looking to negotiate an agreement for an early settlement between them, so that everyone is happy with the outcome.

You'll need confidence and tenacity as it can sometimes be a little confrontational in nature. And the other side will usually say no. So you’ll need to enjoy a challenge.

You will need to put forward a good argument; a lot is done by email, so you don't need to be hugely outgoing, and even a 'quiet thinker' type is good.

If you like solving problems then this is a good job for you.

TRAINING AND PROSPECTS

Initially you will be supporting experienced staff and learning from them, but you'll be encouraged to come up with solutions from an early stage.

The business has a great record of employing graduates, and there are excellent long-term career prospects within the team, and the broader business.

If management is your thing then there will be opportunities when you have a bit more experience.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Full training is provided, so don't worry if you have no experience in this area. In fact, very few graduates who go to work there have even heard of this type of work. Many were initially unsure of what they wanted to do after they finished university, and they studied a wide range of degree types.

WHERE YOU’LL BE WORKING

The offices are in Sidcup (south-east London / Kent), and you will need to be within reasonable commuting distance. After the initial training period, if all goes well you would have the option to work from home for up to 2 days a week.

Salary is reviewed after a few months in the role. If you have some related experience then the starting salary will be at the upper end of the advertised scale.

Start date is asap.
