My client specialises in waste management projects and their senior team includes ex-regulators and consultants with over 30 years' experience. They work nationally with a client base of 500+ businesses in the waste, agriculture and general industries.
They are able to take on any project, no matter the scale. They can discuss ideas, provide advice and reach goals whilst remaining within environmental and planning law. They can help clients gain permissions and can assist business in all other areas of environmental management.


Your new role


You'll be delivering a range of flood risk assessment strategies and schemes to various clients in primarily the waste and recycling sectors, this will include projects such as; Waste transfer stations / recycling centres, change of use projects, wash plants, consolidation of facilities, landform remodelling, reworking of mineral deposits, extension of quarries, landfill management and much more.

  • Actively engaging with a range of projects to manage and support delivery of the team's workload.
  • Liaise with various stakeholders to obtain relevant data, discuss and agree principles where appropriate.
  • Engage with the relevant authorities and act as the face of the business with regard to flood risk assessment, re-strategise schemes when needed.
  • Prepare Flood Risk Assessments in line with prevailing guidance to identify where risks are present and provide site-specific mitigation options This includes using data from a variety of sources to assess risk both quantitatively and qualitatively.
  • Carry out site visits to observe local conditions, identify watercourses and other hydrological features of interest.
  • Support the team in managing projects and client relationships.

Depending on experience:

  • Where appropriate, carry out hydrological catchment analysis to quantify river flows, and construct hydraulic models to predict potential floodplain extents.
  • Many sites are of a scale requiring Environmental Statement chapters. You can support in preparing these.
  • Work with the wider team to prepare surface water drainage strategies, using SuDS principles to manage water quantity and quality.


What you'll need to succeed

  • Solid consultancy experience in a similar role.
  • Experience preparing Flood Risk Assessments for a variety of schemes.
  • Good understanding of the planning system and able to work with a multidisciplinary planning team.
  • Track record of engaging with stakeholders and presenting flood risk work.
  • Experience preparing the appropriate ES Chapters.
  • Wider environmental understanding (ground contamination, geology, ecology) would be desirable.
  • Experience preparing business cases for flood alleviation schemes.
  • Technical report writing skills.
  • Effective verbal communication.
  • Able to work autonomously and as a part of a team.

Desirable, not essential:

  • Experience constructing or running hydraulic models or understanding of outputs and limitations.
  • Experience developing sustainable drainage schemes (SuDs).
  • Experience with the following software; ReFH/WinFAP, MicroDrainage, Flood Modeller Pro, Tuflow, InfoWorks, Civils3D.
  • Hydrogeological assessments.
