Would you like an opportunity to support Hertfordshire delivering better outcomes for children unable to attend school for medical reasons?

We are looking for an inspirational teacher to join the Education Support for Medical Absence (ESMA) Teaching Service, who can deliver outstanding teaching to some of the County’s most vulnerable students. The role involves a combination of face-to-face and online teaching as well as continued pastoral support for a group of students.

Purpose of the role:

The ESMA Teaching Service offers education to students in a variety of formats, including one-to-one and small group teaching, online and face-to-face. Most of the teaching, both face-to-face and online, is delivered from our teaching bases in Hemel Hempstead and Stevenage, so we are looking for an outstanding teacher to deliver quality teaching in person and virtually. An understanding of working with children with medical needs (physical and mental) is desirable but not essential, as training will be provided. We are looking for an excellent communicator who also believes in the importance of pastoral care and support. Detailed knowledge of exam board specifications and exam requirements is essential along with the ability and willingness to contribute to curriculum planning and shared resources.

Challenges & opportunities:

ESMA Teachers have a daily teaching commitment. When not delivering lessons, ESMA teachers fulfil pastoral responsibilities including the monitoring of attendance and engagement, holding planning and review meetings, keeping all data systems updated and liaising with professionals and family.

Technical skills and qualifications required for the role:

  • Educated to degree level and hold Qualified Teacher Status
  • Minimum five years relevant and successful teaching experience
  • You will have recent classroom experience, practice knowledge for the subject specialism (Maths)
  • Able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of relevant high-quality teaching and learning
  • Knowledge and understanding of best practice in relation to meeting the needs of children with health and SEND
  • Ability to model excellent practice and lead by example
  • Be able to evaluate practice and evidence the impact of interventions
  • Commitment to promoting equal opportunities and diversity
  • Excellent communication and technology (ICT) skills
  • Ability to prioritise work within a multi-professional team reflecting service priorities
  • This is a countywide post, so the ability to travel is essential

This is a fantastic opportunity for an outstanding teacher of Maths to join a team dedicated to providing the best possible outcomes for students who are too ill to attend school. If you enjoy small-group teaching, both online and in person, and have a genuine passion for making a difference to the lives of students and their families, then this could be the role for you.
