The role delivers support to our cherished local schools. Not only can you choose to work during term time, ensuring a perfect work-life balance, but there is also the opportunity to take on additional hours during school holidays and weekends. This remarkable flexibility allows you to mould your schedule around other important commitments.

Salary: £14.59 to £15.34 per hour.

Contract: Casual.

Working Pattern: 0-37 hours per week dependant on demand.

Location: Crawley and East Grinstead.

As a Cycle Instructor you will make a difference to multiple people around the county by;

  • Encouraging and developing safe cycling skills.
  • Developing positive attitudes towards road use.
  • Increasing knowledge and understanding of the road and traffic environment.
  • Giving trainees the confidence to use their cycles on local roads.

You will deliver training courses to school age pupils and adults, either in groups or on a one to one basis. This will follow the National Standards for Cycle Training; teaching the fundamental principles of road safety and the skills to control a bicycle and carry out basic manoeuvres on local roads.

You will be delivering all three levels of Bikeability to children and adults, as well as teaching complete beginners where required. This role will also include working with schools to arrange Bikeability training sessions, being the key link between schools and West Sussex County Council.

We can provide training for the right candidates (to become a fully qualified Bikeability Instructor; 1st4Sport level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training).

Experience and Skills

Key Skills:

  • Good oral communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team to ensure that high quality training is carried out at an acceptable trainee to instructor ratio.
  • Judgemental and assessment skills.

Qualifications and/or experience:

  • Fully qualified National Standard Instructor (NQIQ or 1st4Sport level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training) or working towards.
  • To be a competent and experienced cyclist.
  • Understanding of the National Standards for Cycle Training and relevant sections of the Highway Code.
  • Knowledge of basic bicycle maintenance.
  • Experience of team working.
  • Experience of teaching/instructing.
  • Experience of working with children.
