We’ve got an exciting opportunity for an Area Ranger to join our team at Box Hill.

Working in some of the nation’s most stunning places and spaces, come rain or shine, your love of the outdoors will inspire others as you strive to ensure that landscapes are beautifully presented.

What it's like to work here

Situated just 15 miles from London, Box Hill is a famed beauty spot in the North Downs. If you like the great outdoors, you’ll love this stunning location with its breath-taking views, fantastic walks and colourful wildlife. Box Hill has a thriving café and an information hub. You’ll need your own transport to get here, however this is your chance to join a close-knit and small team in a truly idyllic location.

Reporting to the lead ranger, you’ll be managing a ranger, an assistant ranger and a group of dedicated volunteers. You’ll also work with our visitor operations and other ranger teams in the Surrey Hills to manage a high visitor site and protect our rare flora and fauna.

What you'll be doing

You’ll support your fellow rangers in undertaking engagement and conservation work, contributing towards Countryside Stewardship targets. You’ll also be responsible for communicating our conservation work to new and existing audiences,through events, guided walks and engagement with local communities. You’ll understand the need for our countryside sites to bring in income, so your business ideas will play an important part in the team’s success.

You’ll be leading your team on tree safety and woodland management across the properties, which have very significant woodland holdings, with exciting plans to make them much more self-sustainable in the future.

You’ll be responsible for managing the conservation grazing across the chalk grassland on Box Hill with the support of the lead ranger. You’ll build and maintain strong professional relationships with our farming tenants, graziers, contractors, partners and neighbours to deliver more for Land and Nature.

You’ll also take responsibility for compliance, including the health and safety of your team, visitors, tree safety, and environmental management, as well as setting and leading standards relating to environmental practice.

Who we're looking for

We’d love you to have the following skills and experience:

  • evidence of land, access and conservation management, including delivery of projects and supervision of contractors.
  • experience of developing and delivering work programmes to meet conservation, access and project outcomes.
  • ability to communicate at various levels, including colleagues, volunteers and visitors.
  • strong leadership, effective organisation and prioritisation skills
  • practical skills, competencies and experience across a range of countryside disciplines, including a full UK driving licence. 
  • good understanding of risk and compliance processes
