Overview

BARBRI Foundations in Law is a 60-hour online-only course designed to help you familiarise yourself with the law in England and Wales.

Description

The Foundations in Law course runs online over 6 weeks, and you will need to dedicate around 10 hours of study per week to complete the course. The syllabus will give you an introduction to three key areas including:

  • The legal system of England & Wales;
  • Legal research: how to conduct and present it;
  • Core legal terms, concepts, and areas of practice.

Foundations in Law is an opportunity to acclimatise yourself to the study of law and also to get you thinking like a lawyer.

For those interested in taking the SQE exams to qualify as a solicitor, the Foundations course can be taken prior to BARBRI's SQE1 Prep course to help students build foundational knowledge ready to tackle the SQE prep courses with greater confidence.

Who is this course for?

BARBRI Foundations in Law has been designed for anyone looking for an introduction to the study of law in England and Wales. It is ideal for:

  • professionals in legal and non-legal industries, from human resources, regulation and compliance to policing, accounting, tax and legal support staff
  • aspiring solicitors with non-legal degrees wanting some foundational knowledge before embarking on the SQE
  • qualified overseas lawyers looking for dual qualification as a solicitor
  • former law students who would like a refresher before getting started on the SQE.

Requirements

If you're interested in sitting the SQE exam, we recommend that you already have a UK degree (law or non-law), or equivalent, so you can proceed straight into our SQE1 course upon completion of Foundations in Law.

If you don't intend on sitting the SQE soon (or ever), there are no requirements for enrolling in Foundations in Law, other than a keen interest in learning about the English and Welsh law!

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
