About You
- Would suit graduate in the early part of their career looking for interim work who wants to work from remotely for three months. There is the opportunity to learn some new highly valuable skills in Map-Reduce and Hadoop. Java is the basic requirement.
- A desire to work on a greenfield project with a start-up - see below.
- Back-end expertise in Java, Ant, Eclipse, Linux.
It would be advantageous to have expertise in Hadoop, Map-Reduce, Mahout and generally have an algorithmic software capability. However a general understanding of parallel programming will suffice.
- Web expertise in either PHP or Spring is advantageous.
- Expertise in developing robust Java code.
- A desire to learn new technologies.
- Willingness to report on progress every second day
- Willingness to development of test cases for existing and new code
- Construction of a robust configuration process
- Ability to develop with evolving specifications
- BSc in Computer Science, electronics or related subject.
About the Project
This is an exciting project in a company with exceptional growth prospects.
They have spent the last year developing a cutting edge Map-Reduce Hadoop application that extracts pricing and product information from e-commerce retailers so that analysis and tracking can be done on prices, product descriptions and out of stock notifications.
The advantage is that wthey do not need to adapt the software to individual web sites and can automatically recognize the structure and patterns in the data. We do this using advanced pattern recognition techniques.
In order to progress the software, we are looking for a Java developer to work from home and extend the software in the following areas:
- Automated extraction of data from a Hadoop cluster into a web front end. The architecture of this system will be defined according to skills. It is therefore preferable that the developer has some expertise in either PHP or Swing.
- Further development and re-factoring of the core Hosted Analysis software platform of both the Map-reduce data extraction and analysis software.

By the end of this year we expect to be tracking 1000 on-line retailers and selling the feeds to provide competitive information on discounts, promotions and potentially customer opinion about products.
