System Engineer

Description

Responsibilities will include system implementation, test creation and execution and support.  System tools will require the use of interface software, diagnostic tests, database systems, operating systems and software device drivers.  Work will either be carried out via remote connection to the customer or on-site as and when required. This level of engineer is expected to perform work including routine functions requiring the application of standard IT and support principles, procedures and evaluation criteria.

The role requires a high level of understanding of troubleshooting and supporting principles for a wide selection of the company’s software/hardware system products. In addition, the individual require the ability to setup, test and commission new and existing customer systems comprising:

  •  Hardware and application software.
  • Operational environment.
  • Back Office application and hardware environment.
  • SQL DB management.
  • Configuration and setup of wireless and wired network infrastructure.

Main Duties

Carry out or coordinate all levels of support and project tasks including task definition and duration estimation.

Solid root cause analysis skills in addition to practical application of technical assistance.

Carry out software/hardware and system testing, debugging, software/hardware installation and configuration.

As required, create verification plans; capturing needed requirements; adapting existing verification plans for changes to existing or new products.

Participate and contribute in software and hardware product release readiness reviews.

Manage/coordinate customer system changes so that they minimise impact to their organisation.

In a support capacity, instruct customers in the operation of their system and equipment.

Perform corrective and preventative maintenance of installed equipment and systems as part of Managed Service SLA.

Assists in the following areas: customer training, technical assistance, engineering, development and production.

Candidate Specification:

We are looking for the ideal candidate to have a mixture of technical, problem solving and inter-personal skill with the ability to take direction, work under their own initiative or on a project, individually or as part of a team.  The role is varied and will make full use of their skills and as such the company is looking for a self starter with initiative and is prepared to hit the ground running.  The company expectation is that you will look to provide a quality System support and delivery service to our internal and external customers.

Education or Formal Training & Experience Required:

Two or four year technical/science degree - The company may accept relevant experience as a substitute for some formal education.

5 years in a related field

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Solid written/verbal communication skills and presentation skills; solid teamwork abilities

Ability to understand and apply abstract system concepts

Solid understanding and experience of operating IT hardware and software systems in different environments

Experience must include current versions of MS Windows, PC and Server operating systems and their application in a business network environment

Knowledge of telecommunications would be an advantage
