Software Development Manager
Based: North Bristol (easy access to the M5/M4)
Salary: £50,000 to £55,000 + pension, health
Our client is an industry leader at the forefront of Cloud computing delivering, managing and billing multiple applications through service providers to enterprise and SMB customers. This is an excellent time to join the company at the beginning of a 12 month roadmap of development that will have a significant positive impact on the business and be valuable and challenging experience for and ambitious and capable Development Manager.
This is an office-based technical management position. The post holder will be responsible for delivering both software implementations and systems designs under Scrum agile process.
This is a fast-paced environment delivering best in class non-stop global SaaS solutions using the latest technology for our clients own products and also bespoke customer solutions.
They are a Microsoft Gold Partner and the majority of software is written in C# and ASP.NET to run in an Azure environment, with the occasional requirement for other technologies to integrate with systems that do not have an API.
The post holder will report directly to the Technical Director and will liaise closely with other teams across the business.
The post holder will be a driven and capable individual with a high work ethic and strong verbal and written communication skills; delivery focussed and able to motivate staff to achieve results.
As Development Manager you will report monthly to the board against agreed deliverables and KPIs and will maintain a development pipeline comprising of all approved projects.
- Gathering/analysing business requirements
- Prototyping, designing and developing new software programs
- Integrating existing software products and getting incompatible platforms to work together
- Working closely with other staff such as project managers, testers, and support engineers
Managing staff: the department has a flat structure with all staff within the department reporting to the Development Manager. This will involve objective setting, training & certification plans, professional development reviews & holiday scheduling as well as many other line management duties.
Owning the customer and supplier relationships on behalf of the department. This includes liaising with customers to capture requirements and providing demonstrations; and liaising with suppliers to ensure the team have all the documentation and support required.
Maintaining the development backlog; as new feature requests and projects arise they must be estimated and added to the backlog. Working with the Technical Director and other business actors to review and agree priorities on a regular basis and adjust the backlog accordingly.
Resource planning; providing the business with a snapshot of the next 3 months based on the current backlog and resource availability.
Ensure all deliverables are of appropriate quality and delivered to specification.
The post holder must have the following skills:-
- a strong technical background in the development of large-scale hosted services
- experience of delivering to external and internal customers
- exposure to the commercial aspects of running a development department
- extensive commercial experience of C# in OO n-tier systems with SQL Server/T-SQL
- commercial experience of as many as possible of the following: ASP.NET MVC, Entity Framework, design patterns, Enterprise Library, DI containers, TDD, DDD
- commercial experience of Entity Framework and MVC
- proficient in Web Services / SOA, preferably having experience of using WCF, and be comfortable working with 3rd-party APIs.
- exposure to agile development methodologies such as Scrum
