Atkins generation is a multi-disciplinary team within Atkins Energy division team providing specialist support to clients planning to install low carbon energy plant or currently operating power stations or developing new power stations both in the UK and further afield.

The "small generation" group within Leeds,provides input to energy strategy studies, renewable and CHP evaluation and feasibility analysis as well as supporting providers with low carbon investment support. The group gets involved at all stages of the project life cycle from project inception to ongoing operational support.

Projects will involve the application of practical engineering skills associated with low carbon solutions, energy efficiency, CHP, thermal power and other related industries and could typically involve:

  • Feasibility studies for potential power generation projects including CHP and tri-generation.
  • Feasibility of biomass, wind and other renewables.
  • Site work including technical investigations for operating CHP and other plant.
  • Supporting CHP operators in running and optimising their plant.
  • Assisting clients in their low carbon investment plans.
  • Verifying low carbon project applications for financial support on behalf of government agencies and other non governmental bodies.
  • Preparing and submitting proposals to win new work including preparing and presenting proposals to clients at board level.
  • Auditing sites for compliance with schemes such as CHPQA, EU ETS, ROCs FITs etc.
  • Evaluation and feasibility of District Heating Schemes.
  • Financial assessment of energy projects.

Responsibilities

Delivery of defined packages of work to required technical quality within time and budget.

Coordinating and organising work schedule of self and others to ensure successful delivery of defined packages of work.

Provision of energy engineering advice and consultancy to a wide variety clients.

Developing and maintaining customer relationships.

Provision of technical expertise to CHP and other energy projects.

Qualifications

Honours degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or other technical energy related subject.

Essential Criteria

Highly developed understanding of energy, power generation renewables and or CHP and highly proficient in the use of MS Excel.

The ability to travel to work on projects both in the UK and potentially overseas when required.

A good understanding of the UK energy markets and carbon reductions schemes such as CHPQA, EU ETS, CRC, ROCs, FITs, RHI, the Green Deal and the Green Investment Bank.

An understanding of building energy consumption and issues such as relationship of Building Regs, BREEAM, DECs, EPC and aspects affecting building energy efficiency.

Excellent understanding of power generation technologies, CHP plant, district heating, boilers, chillers, heat pumps, solar PV and other equipment.

Ability to understand a wide range of energy conversion technologies including P&IDs, operating instructions, etc and to be able to communicate this to a variety of levels within a client organisation.

Plant/site experience to allow a degree of troubleshooting based on real plant issues.

Project engineering experience and the ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary teams and develop solutions to solve complex and high impact problems.

Understanding of the stages in an engineering project - applicable both to small plant upgrade/modification and the implementation of a major new plant installation.

An understanding of private wire networks and ESCOs.

Desirable Criteria

Membership of IMechE or IET and Chartered Engineer status.
