Our client, a very well established boatbuilder, has doubled its turnover, tripled staff numbers and established a second, larger base in recent years. With a history of successfully serving blue-chip customers worldwide and in several sectors, including oil and gas, it is looking to secure more work in fields such as the fast-growing renewables sector and is recruiting a Naval Architect to continue its impressive growth.

Reporting to the Operations Director, the role is responsible for ensuring that company designed vessels comply with applicable laws and regulations, specified requirements and good marine practice for the service intended.

Working closely with other Technical Department staff, Project Managers and Production to ensure a smooth and timely flow of accurate technical data for purchasing machinery, equipment and vessel production, and for setting testing and trials procedures and requirements, responsibilities include:

• Prepare specifications and undertake basic and detailed design
• Undertake naval architecture calculations relating to local and global strength, weight estimates, intact and damage stability, resistance and propulsion etc.
• Specify work packages and manage design subcontractors
• Manage the detailed work being undertaken by draughtsmen allocated by the Chief Draughtsman
• Plan and manage design processes under their control, liaising with others as necessary
• Prepare technical specifications in time for the purchase of equipment and materials for the vessels
• Assist in marketing the company by participating in client meetings and attendance at exhibitions as required
• Undertake Inclining Experiments, Harbour and Sea Trials, Load Tests, writing Test and Sea Trials procedures as required
• Support the Project Management Department, potentially project managing a complete boat build
• Liaising with the Manufacturing Department to assist with the continuous improvement of designs
• Update with relevant legislation and industry design trends
• Comply with Company HSE and QA policies and procedures

Candidates must have:
• Extensive successful relevant experience gained in boatbuilding, ship building, ship repair or broader, related marine industries
• Well balanced, highly-organised, positive, self-reliant and motivated approach with proven ability to delivering first-class results
• Excellent communication and IT skills
