This Brighton based company specialise in software for the education sector. They have designed the UK's first large scale Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and the first learning platform, DB Primary, designed solely for primary schools.

They currently have a vacancy for a Linux Systems Administrator (permanent), to be based at the offices in central Brighton, a short walk from Brighton station.

You will join a team of two existing Systems Administrators responsible for the management and upkeep of our live infrastructure, including around 65 servers, comprised of web, database, storage and email clusters in a virtualised environment. They will also be involved in recommending and implementing technologies to improve scalability, performance and reliability. The role will involve liaising with our Customer Support and Development teams.

As a member of the Systems team, other duties will include acting as 2nd line support, dealing with day-to-day tasks and procedures and working with our configuration management system. Some on-call and occasional out-of-hours work will be required once familiarity with the environment has been attained.

Required skills:

- At least three years experience of administering Linux machines
- Good knowledge of Debian or Ubuntu
- Thorough understanding of UNIX and common application-layer network protocols (DNS, SMTP, HTTP, etc.)
- Experience of a Java environment and related technologies
- Scripting in Shell, Perl, Ruby or Python
- Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
- Comfortable working in a datacentre environment

Desirable skills:

- Experience of configuration management using Puppet
- Good working knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, network security and BGP
- Experience with virtualisation technologies such as KVM, Xen or VMWare
- Experience with high availability systems and clusters
- Understanding of the Java deployment model and Continuous Integration with Hudson/Jenkins and Maven
- Familiarity with version control using Subversion or Git
- Salary range for the job is £25,000 to £30,000.
