Purpose of the Job
o To take ownership of the network and implement best practise at all times.
o To be responsible for ensuring the performance and availability of the group's IT and communication systems.
o To report to IT management as appropriate.
o To identify and diagnose potential areas of failure in the network services, and to recommend and where appropriate, implement suitable solutions.
o To provide a source of innovative technical information to the IT management team.
o This role will involve approximately 20% first and second line user support.
Main Tasks
1. Ensuring the correct build process and relevant testing of new pcs, laptops and servers.
2. Produce a regular feasibility study to assess the suitability of the IT and Communications network for the business.
3. Monitor server performance, security and functionality, and to investigate and rectify any issues.
4. To manage all aspects of IT security and ensure that any exposure to risk is mitigated, and to liaise with the risk management team.
5. Assists Operations technicians, when needed, with the testing and installation of new system software and upgrades to existing software.
6. Develop, maintain and improve documentation of hardware and operating systems, system configuration and design changes.
7. Work where required, with third party suppliers and consultants to resolve issues or improve IT systems or support.
8. Assisting with the provision of 1st and 2nd line support functions, when helpdesk call volumes demand, including :-
Answering calls to the helpdesk and logging calls into the system.
Investigating and resolving issues.
Identifying where issues should be escalated, both internally and externall in a timely manner.
Ensuring appropriate communication with users at all times.
9. To identify and recommend network improvement opportunities, taking into account the impact on current systems capacity and cost implementations.
10. Preparing the IT and communication equipment to be used in remote offices, Installation and testing onto site.
11. Assist management in the design, and monitoring of the data backup policy. Ensure its ability to restore lost data and its effectiveness in securing the groups' data.
12. Suggest and produce proposals for the procurement of any tools, services or products to enhance the effectiveness of the groups' it services.
13. Actively seek ways to script processes that improve the efficiency of regular tasks, using tools such as powershell.
14. Where required, to assist in the planning and implementation of new projects.
15. Design, implement and monitor house-keeping procedures on files, folders, AD user accounts and printers.
16. To act as mentor on technical skills to the other members of the department.
17. Undertakes other tasks as deemed necessary by management.
Knowledge & Skills
Essential:
o Ability to communicate across all levels of the business.

o Ability to prioritise own workload according to the business need.
o Able to multi task and effectively work on several tasks concurrently.
o At least 3 years experience in a similar role.
o MCITP or MCTS qualified.
o Willingness to be flexible and adapt to changing work demands.
o Commercially Aware.
o Willingness to take on the high risk tasks and larger projects.
o High quality customer service skills.
o Proven Experience in the following technologies :-
Microsoft Server 2008R2
Microsoft Exchange2010
VMware and Vsphere
Network Security including Routing and Firewalls
LANS, VLANS, MPLS, traffic management.
Network management tools eg SSCM or SCOM
Windows AD
Backup software / hardware
Desirable:
Extensive knowledge, understanding and interest in all areas of computing and related environments.
Experience in the following technologies :-
Microsoft Office Suite including OWA
IP Telephony techniques
Unix, Linux
Blackberry, and other smartphone connectivity, security and use in business environments.
Knowledge of ITIL
SQL server
Citrix
