Role Summary:

To develop and deliver people management strategies which support the school’s overall strategic aims and objectives.

The job holder will be expected to contribute at both a strategic and operational level to identify priorities and recommend appropriate people management solutions which support the School’s aims.  The job holder will provide the full spectrum of HR services to the School, expert professional advice and support to managers and staff on all aspects of people management, which reflect currently employment legislation, commercialism and best practice.

Summary of tasks and duties:

Strategic HR Management

  • Identify, design and implement strategic HR projects, as and when required.
  • To contribute to the School’s operational strategies.

Recruitment/Resourcing  

  • Provide support to managers in the recruitment of all staff.
  • Participate in the selection of staff, as appropriate.
  • Ensure all safeguarding checks are completed for employed, self-employed, contractors and volunteers in accordance with regulations.

Employee Relations

  • Work closely with managers, providing them with expert guidance, quality advice, coaching and support on the full range of HR activities including policies and procedures, terms and conditions of employment, absence management, restructuring, performance management, employment law, in order to ensure a consistent and fair approach to people management throughout the School.
  • Act as first point of contact for staff regarding queries, problems etc, acting in the role of Advisor or Counsellor as appropriate, tackling a wide range of issues relating to both work and personal matters.
  • Keep up to date with legal developments and advise management on compliance and risk factors.
  • Manage investigations, disciplinary and grievance matters.
  • Provide advice and guidance on individual employee relations cases, ensuring that these are well managed and meet the requirements of the School’s policies, best practice and employment legislation.
  • Develop, implement and maintain HR policies and procedures to ensure effective, fair and consistent management of staff throughout the school, and ensure that the staff handbook is comprehensive and up-to-date.
  • Ensure that managers and staff are aware of the policies and procedures and able to operate them effectively.

Person Specification - Human Resources Manager

Essential Qualities

  • Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development
  • At least 3 years experience as an HR generalist
  • Proven generalist experience including the ability to work at both strategic and operational levels
  • Fully conversant and up-to-date with all aspects of employment law and HR best practice
  • Experience in the development and implementation of employment policies and procedures
  • Experience at recruitment interviewing
  • Ability to work autonomously and flexibly
  • Influencing, persuading, coaching and negotiating skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prepare and present reports
  • Pro-active and self-motivated
  • Ability to take charge of a situation using own initiative to reach an effective decision
  • Excellent planning and organisation skills to meet deadlines
  • Effective problem solving and analysis skills
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office applications, email and the Internet
  • Excellent attention to detail and high level of accuracy
  • Co-operative and supportive team player
  • A good working knowledge of HR systems

Desirable Qualities

  • Experience in HR in an Education sector
