OBJECTIVES
- To provide leadership to all staff in order to deliver the highest possible quality of care within a safe working and living environment.
- To become the person in charge responsible for the day-to-day running of the home with 24 hour responsibility for the care of the residents.
- To manage the effective use of resources and maintain high levels of occupancy.
- To provide improvement, independence and choice for residents.
- To comply with all regulatory and legislative requirements at all times and in particular the Care Quality Commission and NMC guidelines.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES
Leadership
- To be a good role model for all employees, being approachable and providing a regular presence on the "shop floor" as well as being consistent in all actions and decisions.
- To set and maintain clear standards of care within the Home in line with Shaw healthcare’s quality assessment tool.
- To ensure that staff selection processes for all employees are applied thoroughly and that all candidates are treated professionally. To ensure all qualified nurses maintain their registration with the NMC.
- To develop a culture of continuous quality improvement, using the frame work of clinicalgovernance
- To arrange a comprehensive induction process for all new employees to ensure they are effectively introduced to the home, the residents and good care practices within their first week.
- To encourage the use of research and evidence based practice.
Care practice
- To maintain own professional competence and ensure other staff do so.
- To ensure that all residents have an up-to-date care plan, which is regularly evaluated and actively involves residents in the preparation.
- To ensure all risks associated with care e.g. manual handling, mobility, challenging behaviour and skin care are identified and correctly actioned.
- To regularly monitor the delivery of care given by all staff ensuring that the physical, social, psychological and emotional needs of residents are recognised, assessed and met.
- To ensure residents receive care from the primary health care team and specialist health workers when required.
- To ensure that there is a regular programme of activities, which are arranged in line with the residents’ needs.
- To ensure residents receive a pleasant nutritional diet.
- To maintain an active key worker and associate key worker system for all the residents.
- To ensure the cleaning and hygiene standards of the Home are being met and that as far as possible the home is odour free. To take corrective action when these standards are not met.
- To arrange regular reviews with social workers, residents, relatives and key workers.
- To conduct a pre-admission assessment for all potential residents.
General Management
- To understand the legal requirements of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and other relevant legislation and ensure the home complies with the Essential Standards of Quality and Safety.
- To personally have a full understanding and working knowledge of all Shaw healthcare policies and procedures and ensure that all these policies are applied at all times.
- To ensure medications are ordered, safely stored, administered, recorded and disposed of, in line with NMC guidelines.
- To manage effectively the Home’s financial budgets in order that residents and purchases are given best value.
- To ensure that the staff rota complies with the staffing ratio and meets the needs of the residents.
- To ensure that all annual leave requests are coordinated to prevent disruption in the home.
- To control sickness absence by always conducting back to work interviews and correctly applying company policy.
- To ensure that the Home complies with all statutory obligations and relevant legislation (e.g. environmental health, health and safety). To meet professional and legal responsibilities with regard to Health and Safety issues and to ensure that all monitoring requirements are met.
