Application Developer

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Application Developer to join my client, a national fashion retailer, on a permanent basis.  The role is to be based in the North East and covers the development of system applications including implementation, design, analysis, and enhancement where required.

The key responsibilities of the role include:-

* Control of retail applications such as software development, application software change and change control governance, implementation and application support. Other systems enhancements and support where appropriate.
* Support of existing in-house applications and application interfaces.
* The provision of documentation in support of any application development including relevant training documentation.
* To assist in future systems development and integration.
* To maintain application infrastructure security arrangements such as SQL server operational security, application data security and application interfaces and housekeeping.
* To maintain an awareness of new and emerging technologies relevant to the role.
* Management of specific projects relating to business applications or associated infrastructure.
* Commercial focus and understanding of the day to day operational business needs of IT within a retail company.
* Other such ad hoc duties as may be required to ensure the effective service delivery of IT to the business.

The key technical requirements of the role are technical development and application skills including:-

- Microsoft .NET suite including C#.NET and ASP.NET
- Understanding of VB.NET
- HTML/JavaScript/CSS/PHP/Ajax
- JQuery
- T-SQL
- WCF (Windows Communication Foundation)
- Visual Studio and Visual SourceSafe
- Proficiency in Transact SQL as well as familiarity with SQL 2005/2008 R2 server application product and SQL integration services
- SQL Server 2000/2005/2008 (R2) database architecture
- Thorough understanding of application interfaces
- Experience of source code management and code deployment
- Good analytical, problem solving and organisational skills
- Basic project management skills
- Exposure and understanding of barcode/RF scanner hardware/software desirable but not essential

The client is looking for a candidate who is a Microsoft Certified Applications Developer (MCAD) or equivalent, and who holds a Bachelor's degree or equivalent diploma award.  Retail development experience would be desirable, ideally including experience of development of Electronic Point of Sale solutions, mobile applications, and smart scanner devices.

The candidate should be able to operate independently or as part of a team, and be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels, as well as having good written and verbal communication skills.
