Application Developer with Systems Administration Experience (Web hosting industry)
Paragon Internet Group is seeking an experienced application developer with Linux systems knowledge to assist in the ongoing development and enhancement of a unique and market leading load balanced, clustered web hosting/application platform.
The system, which currently supports tens of thousands of websites, was fully developed in house and brings together an array of different technologies to create a cohesive platform capable of handling the billing, provisioning and automation of many different types of web hosting from domain names to dedicated servers. The majority of the bespoke code is written in PHP, using the Smarty templating system for UI. We also utilise some custom C applications as well as popular open source software such as MySQL and OpenLDAP. We intend to further expand the platform to include a site builder, SaaS and geographically distributed hosting.
We are looking for someone who loves to innovate, who codes for fun as well as for for a living, with detailed knowledge and a proven track record of:
- Object Oriented PHP
- C
- MySQL including database design and optimisation
- Working with 3rd party APIs using XML/SOAP
- Version control (SVN, Git)
Desirable skills would be:
- Experience with NoSQL databases
- OpenLDAP, NFS
- Varnish, Haproxy
- Perl, Python or Ruby experience
- C++ experience
- Windows system administration experience and C#/VB development experience
- Experience in developing financial/accounting/e-commerce platforms
You will be highly logical in your thought processes, tenacious and adaptable with the ability to think "outside of the box" in order to deal with technical difficulties. The scope of the application is vast and it is likely to present challenges that you have not experienced in other roles which you will be ready to face. You will be a good communicator, friendly and personable with excellent spoken and written English.
A graduate degree is favourable but not essential. We will assess each applicant on their own merits.
This is a permanent, full time, salaried position. You will be part of a small team of 15 highly motivated staff in a friendly, relaxed working environment. You will report directly to the Group Technical Director. Paragon offers an excellent compensation package as well as free gym membership and optional private healthcare and pension scheme. A competitive salary of £35k to £65k is offered, dependent on experience.
