Agile Project Manager

The Role:

The role of the Agile Project Manager is to take Releases from the Roadmap and Customers and ensure they are delivered on time, within budget and of high quality.  They will work between the Capability and Engineering teams to facilitate technical implementation and track dependency and delivery.  They will follow all Engineering practices and principles, removing obstacles and reporting on progress to assist in future Roadmap and Resource planning activities.

  • Facilitates the transition of a Release from the Roadmap or a Customer to the Engineering pipelines.
  • Facilitates sessions between Capability Manager and Technical Consultant to ensure a Release is broken into appropriate size Stories.
  • Facilitates technical discussions between all stakeholders to agree implementation plan and communicate plan to all teams.
  • Works at all levels and across geographical boundaries, including outsource Development partners.
  • Ensures effective communication between collocated teams.
  • Ensures technical vision common to all Releases is followed.
  • Ensures Stories are raised as estimates within each Engineering team (Development, Web Services, Information, Knowledge, … )
  • Tracks estimate output from the Engineering teams to create a Release Project plan, including:
    • Cost and effort budget
    • Delivery timeframe
    • Acceptance criteria
    • Tracks dependencies between Stories and manages priorities based on feedback from Capability manager and Technical Consultant
    • Manages transition of activity between the Engineering teams through to Delivery.
    • Checks acceptance criteria are satisfied prior to delivery, and arranges final sign off from Stakeholders.
    • Arranges quarterly planning sessions with the Engineering Team Leads to schedule Stories into approved Resource allocation.
    • Attends iteration planning sessions to advise priority and agree Commitment.
    • Updates Release Project plan as changes occur and advises stakeholders as necessary.
    • Publishes regular status and tracking reports, including:
      • Quality
      • Estimation variation
      • Cost vs. budget
      • Acts as the escalation point for conflict and resolves in a timely and agreed fashion with authority and resilience.
      • Tracks and monitors actions.
      • Provides feedback to Resource Management on Engineering Team performance.
      • Works with Head of Capabilities and Resource Management to advise changes to general Roadmap and Resource allocation.
      • Travels between implementing Engineering teams regularly.
      • Ensures approved development practices and procedures are followed within implementing team and implements improvements as required.

Competencies and Experience

Essential

  • Comprehensive technical project delivery experience within a software environment.
  • Sound business acumen.
  • Delivery of technical projects to internal departments.
  • Delivery of technical projects to external Customers.
  • Delivery of multiple projects plans simultaneously.
  • Experience working across geographical boundaries, including utilisation of resource within a remote team.
  • Technical background within software engineering environment.
  • Understanding of Agile methodologies:
    • Iterations; Commitments; Planning; Pipelines/Backlogs; Stories; Velocity
    • Experience interacting at all levels of a business ("shop floor to board level")
    • Effective communication skills and presentation skills.

Desirable

  • Experience as a Developer.
  • Project Management qualification.

  • Releases delivered on time, in budget, to scope with high quality.

  • Engineering team Pipelines full for minimum 3 iterations.
  • Roadmap commitments fully realised.
