Local government and NHS

PKF is one of only five private sector audit suppliers to the Audit Commission. Our Eastern Region designated centre of excellence for this work is our Ipswich office. The local government and NHS team is a leading edge, award-winning, innovative group consistently involved in development and piloting work.

Our local government and NHS team provides an expert service to a wide variety of public sector bodies, including Unitary, District councils and Primary Care, Acute and Foundation Trusts, with annual budgets of between £50m and £1.3bn. We also undertake audits of linked corporate bodies, including housing management companies (ALMOs) and Community Interest Companies, and also NHS charitable funds.

Purpose of the role:

To work as part of a team within the local government and NHS department dealing with a mixed portfolio of clients working to complete systems-based accounts audits, Value for Money assessment work and grants certification.

Principal duties:
  • Gathering of audit evidence through communication and interaction with client staff;
  • Ensure audit files have all relevant documentation on the appropriate section; check appropriate and sufficient documentation obtained to support the opinion and documenting all conclusions;
  • Active adherence to budget and timetable, bringing matters to the attention of the manager, particularly when actual time is in excess of budget;
  • Involvement in the planning, execution and finalisation of the audit assignment supporting the Manager;
  • Ensure compliance with internal (audit methodology and risk management) and external (regulatory) requirements;
  • Develop and strengthen client relationships;
  • Add value to clients' businesses through analysing their strengths and weaknesses, and recommending effective solutions;
  • Supervise, coach and develop junior members of staff within the team, on client premises, in the office, delegating where appropriate.
  • Providing feedback on the work on less experienced staff and contributing to the appraisal process.
  • Carry out ad hoc assignments as may be reasonably required by your group;


Person Specification

Education / Qualifications:
  • Qualified AAT or Part- Qualified CA/ ACA/ ACCA/ CIPFA with some post-qualification experience in a similar environment.


Key Competencies:
  • Experience of working in a professional firm, or of working for/on behalf of the Audit Commission, NHS and or Local Government;
  • Familiarity with the basics of the Code of Audit Practice would be advantageous;
  • Able to approach projects logically, with good numerical skills;
  • An attention to detail and accuracy is necessary and an essential part of the role;
  • Ability to communicate at all levels both internally and externally;
  • Delivering results and meeting client expectations;
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word and Microsoft office applications essential;
  • Full driving licence is necessary.
