About this Course
This nationally accredited distance learning qualification in Understanding the Safe Handling of Medicines is designed to provide you with the theoretical knowledge that you need to help you understand and handle medication within your workplace.
The NCFE course covers a wide range of information, best practice and legislation including an introduction to the types of medication that an individual is likely to encounter, explanation of the correct storage and handling of medication as well as legislative requirements for audit process and issues and accountability and responsibility.

Workbook 1 - Understanding medication and prescriptions
This workbook will introduce the many types of medicines you may come across in your workplace. When you have completed this workbook you should know and understand:
- The different types of medication and how they are classified.
- Legislation and guidelines relating to medication.
- The roles of staff and others in the medication process.
- How to access information about medication.
Workbook 2 - Supply, storage and disposal of medication
This workbook contains information about the way medication is prescribed, supplied and stored. You will look at the requirements for storing different medicines as well as how medicines are ordered, dispensed and disposed of. When you have completed this workbook you should know and understand:
- How medicines are supplied and obtained.
- The requirements for storing and safe disposal of medication.
Workbook 3 - Understanding the requirements for the safe administration of medication
This workbook covers how medications should be administered in a safe and hygienic way, and in a way that respects individuality, privacy, choice and independence. When you have completed this workbook you should know and understand:
- How medication is administered safely and in a way that meets individual needs.
- How to support individuals to administer their own medication.
- The procedures to follow when there are problems with the administration of medication.
- How the effects of medication are monitored.
Workbook 4 - Record-keeping and audit
processes for medication administration and storage
This workbook covers responsibility and accountability in relation to handling medication. You will also look at the different records that need to be kept in order to comply with legal requirements. When you have completed this workbook you should know and understand:
- The audit process in relation to medication transactions and stock levels.
- How information is recorded and confidentiality maintained.
- Your own role in relation to accountability and responsibility..

NCFE Award in the Prevention and Control of Infection Level 2
A registration fee of £52.00 is due within four weeks of enrolment if you wish to receive an NCFE certificate on successful completion of your course.
Please note that certificates are issued three times per year.
Method of Study

Method of Assessment
The course contains a number of assignments which your tutor will mark and give you valuable feedback on. We call these Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs). These can all be taken and submitted online.
Course Length Information
The guided learning hours (GLH) for this course is 110 and you can take the course over a maximum of 12 months. If you do not complete within this time them you will need to re-enrol. Extensions are not allowed.
Tutor Support
You will have access to a tutor via email and the student portal who will mark your work, guide you through the course and assist you with any problems you may have. In addition you will be supplied with a comprehensive Study Guide which will help you through the study and assessment process.
