Overview

You will have the opportunity to explore a variety of creative disciplines including elements of; Graphic Design, photography, packaging and branding, illustration, editorial design, interior/surface graphics, 3D design, architecture, typography, creative thinking and aspects of animation/digital arts. You will work on projects both independently and in within groups to develop the teamwork and communication skills necessary to work within the subject.

As this is a two year course you will progress from the basics within the subject through to more advanced techniques and professional outcomes in the second year. This course is ideal for learners who wish to pursue further studying at Higher Education and progress into a career within the creative sector. Many of our learners continue studying Graphic Design at New College Durham.

Description

You will take part in a range of design based activities to build a good understanding of the subject. Projects are arranged by units, with most of the work being coursework based. Each project is designed to give you an insight into a particular skill or specialism. This is very advantageous as it will allow you to try new activities and build different skills leading towards a range of work to show in a portfolio. You will work with traditional design techniques (pencils, paper, inks and pens) and also the industry standard design software on our up to date Apple Mac computers, along with Digital SLR cameras and other equipment. The opportunity exists to partake in live briefs by local and national organisations and visit a variety of art galleries and design based exhibitions.

You will partake in work experience opportunities to build your skills in the work place and prepare you for employment.

English and Maths skills are an increasingly important requirement for the workplace. Lecturers will support you to develop these skills as part of your studies. These are mandatory requirements of the course.

The course team take students on regular trips both nationally and internationally. Recent trips have included visits into Durham, Newcastle, London and Barcelona. Our department has strong links with well-established design agencies in Newcastle and London with many of our students undertaking work placements with award winning companies.

Requirements

A minimum of four GCSEs at grade C and above, or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in a related subject. One of your GCSEs must include either English or Maths, alternatively a Level 2 certificate in Literacy or Numeracy will be considered. You will be asked to bring a creative portfolio to interview with you (this could include art and design, graphic design, design and technology and similar subjects), and will also be required to successfully complete the course induction period. If you don’t have the qualifications to gain entry there are level 2 courses available which are designed to help you progress onto level 3 programmes.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
