Overview
The aim of the course is to enable you to study the concept of sport from a performance and excellence viewpoint. Through practical experience and an investigative approach to theoretical aspects, you will be prepared for either further study or employment in a related field.
Description
To achieve the Diploma you must successfully complete 120 credits (The extended diploma is 180 credits) consisting of core and optional units. Each unit is worth 10 credits (unless otherwise specified)
Core Units include:
- Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport (5 credits)
- The Physiology of Fitness (5 credits)
- Assessing Risk in Sport
- Fitness Training and Programming
- Fitness, Testing for Sport and Exercise
- Sports Nutrition
- Psychology for Sports, Performance
- Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport.
The Athlete's Lifestyle Optional Units include: Sports Coaching, Sports Injuries, Current Issues in Sport, Analysis of Sports Performance, Exercise, Health and Lifestyle, Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise, Organising Sports Events, Sport and Exercise Massage, Practical Team Sports, Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology.
In addition, the course also includes the development and assessment of functional skills in maths and English
You will also be helped to improve your employability skills and complete a work placement as part of your study programme. The course is usually held over four days of the week, and additional time can be used for independent study, or, if needed, additional support. Each unit is assessed by assignments, workbooks and presentations. Assignments vary depending upon the unit, but they are often of a practical, investigative nature.
Requirements
For the Level 3 Diploma a minimum of four GCSEs at grade C (including English and preferably Science) or equivalent is required. For example, the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport may be accepted at a merit level with an appropriate qualification in English. Mature applicants will be interviewed. Places on the Level 3 Extended Diploma are subject to minimum grade requirements (4 GCSE's at A-C including English, Maths and Science) or equivalent (e.g. BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport at a distinction level) as well as BKSB assessments in English and Maths and free writing exercises, to be held during the induction period.
