Do you watch the TV gardening programmes and wonder how you could be as diverse as the presenters are with the different garden designs they come up with? Our course in Landscaping will provide you with the skills to set you on this road to success.
The course aims to develop a solid understanding of the principles and procedures underlying the design and development of garden areas. The subject is relevant to both public and private landscaping and equally of value in developing home gardens or public parks. Though consideration is given to both design and construction, the emphasis throughout the course is landscape design itself.
Description
Syllabus:
Module 1 – Basic Design Procedure
Summarise the principles involved in the basic design procedure and list the pre-planning information required
Module 2 – History of Gardening Styles
Differentiate between formal, normal and natural gardens and summarise how garden styles have changed over time
Module 3 – Draughting and Contracting
Describe the design procedure and list the illustrations symbols used
Module 4 – Basic Landscape Construction
Summarise the importance of adequate drainage
Define the walls discussed in this unit
List the elements involved in layout specifications
Module 5 – Surfacings, Furnishings and Features
Examine the types of surfacings mentioned in this unit and discuss the performance considerations that should be kept in mind
Define two gardening features and discuss the characteristics of each
Module 6 – Trails
Define the elements to be considered when planning a trail
Module 7 – Tools and Machinery
Summarise the safety precautions discussed in this unit
Module 8 – Earthworks
Examine erosion and its causes
Examine soil acidification and its causes
Module 9 – Cottage Garden Features
Identify four common garden features and discuss each in detail
Summarise how to use edging to the best effect
Module 10 – Tools and Machinery (cont.)
Differentiate between ferrous and non ferrous metals
List the considerations involved when using tools
Summarise what sprayers are used for and list the safety precautions to be followed when using sprayers
Assessment
Assessments are a great way of checking your progress allowing you to apply your learning to real-world situations. Through the Landscaping (Level 3) Course by NCFE, students will be assessed by a series of written assignments, which are submitted to and marked by your tutor.
All assignments are set by NCFE. Upon verification of the activities, exercises and assignments, a certificate of achievement will be awarded by the national awarding organisation NCFE, as confirmation that your written work has met all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the programme. There is no external examination required.

You will have access to a tutor, via email, who will mark your work and guide you through the course to help you be ready for your examinations. In addition you will be supplied with a comprehensive Study Guide which will help you through the study and assessment process.
The course pack includes, guidance on relevant study skills and full tutor support comprising:
- the marking of a series of assignments
- written answers to specific study problems
- full tutor support via emails
- a copy of our study guide, will give you guidance on studying and submitting assignments
Study Time
Study Hours are an approximate figure and are dependant upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. Furthermore, at the end of each lesson there is a question paper that needs to be completed and returned to your tutor. You should allow enough time to complete assignments/ question papers.
The approximate amount of time required to complete the Landscaping (Level 3) course is: 96 hrs

Our Landscaping (Level 3) course is openly available to anyone wishing to learn more about Landscaping and has a keen interest in the subject, plus an intention to progress a career.
- Learners will need sufficient numeracy and literacy
- Students should have access to a computer and the internet throughout your study period.
