Overview
The level 2 logistics course route is designed to provide an introduction to team leading and business as well as enabling you to choose two additional study options in logistics related disciplines including warehousing, inventory, international trade and freight. The logistics course route aims to support your career progression in the field of logistics and transport through gaining a recognised qualification.
The Institute of Supply Chain Management qualifications can be completed in a flexible manner, tailored to the needs of the individual studying. Those wishing to complete the qualification can achieve the required elements through a combination of study/development and demonstration of competence. When enrolling on one of these qualifications individuals will be provided with a breakdown of the requirements for the units included or those they have selected.
Description
Students are required to complete the following two mandatory uinits. Followed by any two of the optional units.

This unit covers the roles and responsibilities, authority limits and accountability of a team leader.
The unit looks at different types of leadership styles and how to use these to build a shared sense of purpose within a team.
This unit also looks at the use of effective communication within team leadership.
Business

Quality management
Customer satisfaction
Managing resources
This business unit looks at the purpose and functions of a range of business organisations and how departments within a business work together.
The importance of communication skills in business is also addressed covering the different types of communication and potential barriers.
It also looks at the use of quality management systems within business, understanding and measuring customer satisfaction, utilising and managing resources and cost accounting within business.
Optional units. Students can select any two of the following eight units.
Customer Service.
Customer service is of utmost importance in maintaining effective supply chain operations. This unit covers the principles of customer service and the importance of delivering good customer service for an organisation. It looks at the impact good customer service has not only on the customer but on the employees delivering the service. The difference between internal and external customers is addressed with a look at company customer service policies. Dealing with customers from different age groups and cultures and methods for effectively handling angry or distressed customers are covered as well as methods for measuring and monitoring customer service.
International trade and freight
For international supply chain operations a solid knowledge and understanding of the principles of international trade and freight is key. This unit provides a foundation understanding of international trade and freight operations. It looks at current international legislation on the movement of goods and required documentation. It addresses the roles of different organisations in moving freight and the requirements for understanding customer needs. The unit also covers the selection and recommendation of suitable modes of transporting goods and looks at ways of identifying problems that can occur in international trade.
Manufacturing planning and control
The successful planning and control of manufacturing operations is essential to the success of any supply chain operation. This unit looks at the key functions within a manufacturing process, the process of converting inputs into outputs and the main processes in assembly. It covers decision making around engaging external organisations to participate in the manufacturing process and the decision to "make" or "buy". Effective production planning is addressed including material control as well as manufacturing improvement techniques
Movement of goods
The effective movement of goods ensures that goods and supplies reach their required destination in a timely, safe and efficient manner to support efficient supply chain operations. This unit looks at how the characteristics of goods impact on their handling process. It covers the basic concepts of route planning and scheduling for the movement of goods and the characteristics of the various modes of transportation and their infrastructure requirements. The role of collection, storage and distribution centres is also covered along with an understanding of the main regulatory and enforcement bodies for the movement of goods in your country.
Purchasing
A sound understanding of the fundamentals of purchasing can have a significant impact on the efficiency of supply chain operations. This unit covers the features of procurement and purchasing functions within an organisation. It looks at the stages of the purchasing process, including cycle and lead times, as well as analysing market information to inform purchasing decisions. Conducting appraisals of suppliers is addressed as well as the development of effective communications and business relationships with suppliers. The unit also covers purchasing plans and their development and understanding supply contract legislation in your country.
Supply chain
Understanding the fundamentals of supply chain operations is the key to successful supply chain management. This unit looks at the key characteristics of a supply chain and the relationships between the links. It looks at the specific roles organisations play within a supply chain and the ways in which they are organised. The importance of effective communications within supply chains and the different methods of communication are also covered with barriers to communication and methods of identifying these also addressed. The unit also looks at risk within supply chain operations, the most common risks and the impact that potential risks have on maintaining effective operations
Team development and performance
The performance of teams within a business has a direct impact on the success of the organisation. This unit covers a range of topics associated with achieving optimum performance from teams and developing individuals effectively. It addresses effective communication and setting and monitoring the achievement of objectives to meet organisational needs. Supporting team members, identifying opportunities and handling conflict within teams are also covered. The unit also looks at the planning and development of induction programmes for new team members and the importance of training, mentoring and support.
Warehousing and inventory
Efficient warehousing and inventory operations are key to ensuring that goods and supplies are readily available when they are required to maintain effective supply chain management. This unit looks at the purpose and characteristics of inventory and the importance of controlling inventory levels. It looks at how goods are received and the key activities which take place within a warehouse. The importance of health and safety considerations within a warehouse environment is also addressed.
Requirements
There are no previous skills or qualifications required to register for this study programme. This course is open to all students, enrolments can be taken at anytime of the year unlike the traditional local college who tend only to enrol in September. Home Learning offers flexibility.
