Overview
In the IGCSE English course you'll take your knowledge of the English language back to the basics and learn the rules of grammar and the intricacies of punctuation.
You will also learn to write concisely and with clarity and will apply this knowledge to a number of practical writing tasks, such as report and letter writing. This will allow you to increase your command of English and to express yourself more confidently.
The study of English is about more than business, and to broaden your skills and confidence you will also study a variety of texts as part of the IGCSE English course, analysing content and writing style. You'll also work on developing your own style through a number of creative writing exercises.
What you will learn in the IGCSE English Language course will have a long-lasting effect on your career. No matter what the profession, job and promotion opportunities will always favour those who can speak clearly and fluently and express their thoughts clearly and convincingly in writing. Key topics studied throughout this course include:
Basic English
- This section of the course covers the basic English skills that you will need in order to complete the rest of the course successfully. There are no specific questions on spelling and punctuation in the examination, but you will be expected to punctuate and spell correctly, as well as write good, grammatical English.
- Key topics within this section include Different Kinds of Language, Nouns, Pronouns and Verbs, Punctuation, Paragraphs, Spelling and Vocabulary.
Reading Comprehension
- In the examination you will be asked questions to assess your understanding and response to a variety of texts. This section of the course will teach you how to select information from this material and present it in short paragraphs or in sets of statements.
- Key topics within this section include Reading Skills, Assessing the Structure and Skill of an Argument, Presenting Arguments Objectively and Analysis of Arguments.
Writing to Specific Guidelines
- This section of the course will teach you how to write according to clear guidelines: for example, to write a letter, a report or a newspaper article.
- Key topics studied within this section include Transactional Writing, covering Formal and Informal Letters; Writing a Report; Article and Diary Entry; Writing Arguments, and Writing to Persuade.
Extended Writing
- In the final section of the course you will pull together all the skills and techniques you have studied throughout the course and apply them to produce an original piece of writing.
- Key topics studied include Personal/Expressive Writing, Transactional or Functional Writing and Personal/Abstract Writing.
