The Foundation Degree in Drug and Alcohol Counselling and Treatment provides an introduction to drug and alcohol work for a broad range of people. The course will provide the skills, knowledge base and expertise needed to use a combination of counselling and therapeutic interventions in a range of contexts within the drug and alcohol field.
Description
This course will provide you with a broad overview of the theory and practice of substance use counselling and interventions, and an in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of working with substance users in the drug and alcohol field. You will learn how to use counselling skills in the workplace and undertake a placement working with clients in a contained and professional environment. You will study the ethical frameworks that underpin and contain good practice in drug and alcohol counselling and interventions. The academic skills you gain can be applied to discussing the complexities of counselling and intervention theory and practice with substance users, and to critical evaluation of research and academic texts to inform your practice and support your professional development.
As part of the course, you will complete a two-year placement with a drug or alcohol counselling treatment agency. On the four-year course, this takes place in Years 3 and 4; on the three-year course, it takes place in Years 2 and 3.
This part-time course is taught by distance learning. We also offer a similar degree via face-to-face teaching sessions on campus.
