Unit 1 ecological concepts: habitats, biomes, nutrient cycles, food webs and chains, the niche concept, trophic levels and energy transfer
Unit 2 diversity and distribution: genetic diversity, species distributions, ecosystem health and dynamics
Unit 3 tropical rainforest ecology: the canopy, microclimates, canopy and gap dynamics, species richness, ecosystem fragility
Unit 4 Marine ecology: coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass and kelp forests, marine animals and their distribution
Unit 5 Virtual survey: survey methods, data collection, recording and presenting data, presenting a professional report based on a virtual survey
Unit 6 Practical survey: carry out your own survey using the skills learned in unit 5.
Each unit is assessed through an assignment set at pass, merit and distinction so there is a range of achievement levels.
