Do you want to gain your QTLS? Are you in a trainee teacher role with access to 100 hours of teaching?

At MKLC we have designed the Diploma in Education and Training course content to be accessible for all, the course lessons are self paced, so if you feel confident in certain areas you progress quickly through these to the areas you wish to focus more on. You can also complete the assignments in the order you prefer. You will receive feedback from your tutor within 48 hours of submission, but each piece is independent so you can submit pieces whilst waiting on feedback from another.

You have contact with your tutor by e-mail, as well as the main office 9am to 5pm which is staffed only by employees who are qualified teachers and assessors and have experience with the courses, including the Diploma in Education and Training course to be able to give you the most effective response to queries.

MKLC will register with the Awarding Body, after which you can apply for a student membership with the Society of Education and Training.

Description

The Diploma in Education and Training course is a level 5 qualification accredited by Pearson, an Ofqual accredited Awarding Body, ensuring the course meets a standard of quality.

  • Course content:

To achieve the Diploma in Education and Training, you will need to achieve 120 credits. There are 4 mandatory units counting towards 75 credits. Of the optional units for the Diploma in Education and Training, MKLC's programme uses the unit Teaching in a Specialist Area (15 credits), Action Research (15 credits) and Developing, using and Organising Resources in Education and Training (15 credits), these units are suitable for people from all industries and tailors the course to your area of specialism.

Teaching Practice

Mandatory units:

  • Developing teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training (65 GLH 20 credits)

The aim of this unit is to give the learner knowledge, understanding and skills relating to teaching, learning and assessment in education and training. This unit relies heavily on the learner being able to review their own skills and understanding through reflecting on their teaching in a practical context – based on the planning, delivering and assessing of inclusive teaching and learning in a specialist area. (This specialism can be further developed through the selection of appropriate optional units). The learner must demonstrate their ability to create and maintain an inclusive learning environment and then to evaluate their own teaching in order to develop their practice.

  • Teaching, learning and Assessment in Education and Training (65 GLH 20 credits)

The aim of this unit is to give the learner knowledge, understanding and skills relating to teaching, learning and assessment in education and training. The unit aims to develop the learner’s understanding of the principles and practices underpinning practical skills. Underpinning the understanding of teaching and learning is an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a teacher in education and training. This understanding helps the learner to appreciate their role in relation to their learners and other professionals when negotiating and agreeing individual learning goals.

  • Theories, Principles and Models in Education and Training (60 GLH 20 credits)

The aim of the unit is to give learners underpinning knowledge and understanding to help in the development of their own practice in education and training.The unit addresses the importance of understanding the role of communication so that the learner is better equipped to deliver effectively. The unit also addresses the underpinning knowledge needed to create approaches to assessment that meet learner and assessment needs. Through developing an understanding of theories and models influencing curriculum development the learner is able to relate them to their own area of specialism. Through developing an understanding and ability to apply theories and models of reflection the learner will be in a better position to use the skills in the evaluation and improvement of their practice.

  • Wider Professional Practice and Development in Education and Training (50 GLH, 15 credits)

The aim of this unit is to enable the learner to understand and apply the concept of professionalism, and dual professionalism, in order to promote wider professional practice in education and training. Based on an understanding of professional values the learner will be able to appreciate influences on their practice, in an area of specialism, determining their role and responsibilities. The unit gives learners the opportunity to develop an understanding of the social, political and economic factors that influence policy and the impact that policy has on their curriculum and practice. The unit also encourages learners to explore the impact of organisational processes and procedures, including those resulting from increasing accountability to stakeholders and external bodies.

  • Action Research (50 GLH, 15 credits)

This unit aims to enable learners to carry out action research in an area of professional practice. The unit helps learners to understand the nature and purpose of action research, conducting action research and presenting the outcomes. The unit also involves evaluating own practice in relation to action research.

  • Developing, Using and Organising Resources in Education and Training (50 GLH, 15 credits)

The aim of this unit is to enable learners to develop, use and organise resources in the lifelong learning sector. The unit covers the purpose, development and use of resources, how to organise them and enable access to others. It also covers legal requirements, responsibilities relating to resources and evaluating own practice in their development and use.

  • Teaching in a Specialist Area (50 GLH, 15 credits)

The aim of this unit is to develop learners’ knowledge and skills in relation to teaching in a specialist area. The unit includes consideration of the aims and philosophy of education and training in a specialist area and the aims and structure of key qualifications and learning programme qualifications available. It also looks at curriculum issues, inclusive learning and teaching, and evaluating and improving own practice in a specialist area.

When you begin your course, you will be allocated a tutor and provided with access to our online Moodle site, you will then be able to work through the course at times suited to you, we are here to help guide and support you through. All assignments are uploaded to the Moodle site, this is a straight forward process, but we also provide guides or you can call us for assistance if required.

  • Teaching Practice

You are required to cover 100 hours of teaching practice. This should be logged and signed off by your organisation and manager on headed paper. Within these 100 hours, you must produce 8 hours of observations of your teaching practice. These can be carried out in your own teaching environment, preferably over a period of time to show your progression. The observer can be your own manager or a qualified teacher who can give you support, they will need to have at least a level 5 teaching qualification and be able to provide evidence of these. Teaching practice can also be observed remotely. In some cases a Zoom session may be possible but you will need to discuss with MKLC. We can also come to your workplace or observe remotely and carry out the observations ourselves, although this will be at an additional cost. It is advised that each observation should be 1 hour as the purpose is to show your progression.

Who is this course for?

This course is suited to anyone over 19 who is interested in looking to obtain an accredited teaching qualification, especially looking to progress to QTLS.

The DET is suitable for teachers, trainers and tutors working in further education, adult and community learning or work-based training within public, private, voluntary or community organisations.

The qualification can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers and trainers, including:

  • individuals who are not currently teaching and training but who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements of the qualification
  • individuals who are currently teaching and training, including those who have just begun teaching and training and who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification
  • individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a teaching qualification and who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice, of the qualification.

Requirements

  • No prior teaching qualification is required
  • Access to 100 hours of teaching
  • Where possible someone with at least a Level 5 teaching qualification for the 8 hours observations, however if you do not have access to someone, please contact us and we will see how we can assist you
  • Working at Level 2 in English and Mathematics
  • Basic ICT skills (the course is online using our Moodle site, the level of skill set is just basic Microsoft office and able to upload attachments)

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
