Child Development Advanced Course

An understanding of child/young people development is of paramount importance to any person working with or involved with children/young people. Understanding child development forms part of the curriculum for the various qualifications you can study for if you wish to work with children/young people.

The Early Years Foundation Stage recognises the importance of developing an understanding of a child’s development.

The “child” in this context of this course will include young people up to the age of nineteen years which is the age range defined in the children and young people’s workforce qualifications.

This course is divided into four units, each of which deals with a particular aspect of development. Each unit also addresses one or more of the course learning outcomes so that when you have completed the entire course you will have achieved all the course learning outcomes as follows:

This unit will begin to address learning outcome 1 (stated above). This learning outcome will be divided into a set of activities to guide your studies. This unit will focus on learning outcome 2 (stated above). This learning outcome will be divided into a set of activities to guide your studies. In this unit you will research the different influences that affect children and young people’s development including their background, health and the environment in which they live.

Unit 3: Understand how to support children and young person’s development

This unit will focus on learning outcome 3 and 4 (stated above). These learning outcomes will be divided into a set of activities to guide your studies. In this unit you will be introduced to the idea of using observations on children and young people to support their development. You will plan activities for children and young people that will support their holistic development and encourage positive behaviour.

Unit 4: Understand the potential effects of transitions on children and young person’s development

This unit will focus on achieving learning outcome 5 (stated above). To guide your studies, this part of the learning outcome will be divided into a set of activities to guide your studies. In this unit you will learn about the range and variety of different transitions that children and young people may experience. You will then reflect and consider the ways that adults can support children and young people when they experience these transitions.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
