Overview
Electronic engineering is one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic fields of engineering. The BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Electronic Engineering course will prepare you for an electronics career which could take you to the cutting edge of technology. Almost every area of life involves electronics, from mobile phones to cars to aeroplanes and from our television sets to complex medical equipment, and there is massive potential for electronic engineering jobs.
The BTEC Electronic Engineering course leads to a nationally-recognised BTEC Level 3 Certificate and makes an ideal entry to an electronic engineering career.
The course will teach you the basics about Analogue and Digital Circuits and take you up to more complex elements and the use and behaviours of components such as resistors, capacitors, diodes, and transistors.
You will study the Principles and applications of electronic devices and circuits, and also the application of analogue electronics.
You will use your electronic engineering training to explore different electronic applications, such as the construction of digital systems in electronic engineering.
You will work on building practical circuits using our kit of parts and learn to test your circuits to ensure that they function correctly.
On completion of the BTEC Certificate in Engineering course you will have the knowledge you need to enter a range of electronic engineering jobs at trainee level.
Assignments are a great way of checking your progress. During your BTEC course, you will complete three end-of-unit assignments.
- Assignment 1: Principles and Applications of Electronic Devices and Circuits - Written test paper
- Assignment 2: Principles and Applications of Analogue Electronics - Written test paper
- Assignment 3: Construction and Applications of Digital Systems - Written test paper
Each assignment question may ask you to write a short essay (of several paragraphs), draw a circuit diagram, draw a waveform, and create a truth table. The assignments could also ask you to write a report. Study the grading criteria for each assessment prior to completion to ascertain what is required for each paper.
You will also be asked to provide photographic and video evidence to show the circuits you have built in operation.
Assessments can be sent to us online via the ICS Student Community: it's the fastest way to receive your results.
Description
Because we're experts in home learning, ICS knows about and offers all the support you need along the way.
You'll receive study materials that have been specially designed for distance learning by experts in your chosen field.
You will also receive a free set of materials called Mathematics to Help with Electronic Calculations.
You'll receive a kit of parts for you to use to build and test your analogue and digital circuits. Your circuits will be built on solderless breadboard and use a voltage no greater than 6V so it will be perfectly safe for you to use.
As a BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Electronic Engineering student, you'll receive the complimentary textbook: Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics.
Alongside your materials, you will have access to an experienced personal tutor both online and over the phone, ready to help you with guidance and motivation.
You'll also be part of the ICS Student Community, where you'll have access to activities and online resources, and your account information, as well as vital links with your fellow students, with the chance to discuss your work, ask questions and make new friends.
Principles and Applications of Electronic Devices and Circuits
The first unit of the course provides a practical introduction to basic electronic devices and analogue and digital electronic principles. It provides learners with an opportunity to investigate the operation of diodes and transistors, two of the most important building blocks in electronic circuits. You will then go on to build and test circuits that make use of these devices and will consider the operation of integrated circuits such as the operational amplifier.
Principles and Applications of Analogue Electronics
The unit will cover the operation of analogue electronic circuit systems and their components. You will then be able to apply your understanding of principles and operation in the design and testing of analogue electronic circuits for specified functions using electronic computer-based methods. Finally, you will be given the opportunity to build and test circuits such as a filter, amplifier, oscillator, transmitter/receiver, power control, or circuits/systems with telecommunication applications.
Construction and Applications of Digital Systems
This final unit will give you an understanding of recent advances in digital electronics and the new technologies that often replace older electrical and electronic systems (legacy systems). You will also develop an understanding of how the components of an electronic system are connected together (interfaced) to enable analogue signals to be transmitted digitally.
Requirements
To enrol in the BTEC Electronic Engineering course, you must be over 16 and should be educated to at least GCSE standard A*-C or equivalent in Mathematics and Physics.
It is assumed that you are already familiar with electrical theory; voltage current and resistance; resistors capacitors and inductors; and the use of basic instruments such as multimeters.
