BTEC Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment

Overview

The BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment is recognised across the construction industry as an ideal start for those wishing to progress towards supervisory or technician roles, or professional qualifications. A diploma in construction can lead to a career in a number of construction trades, with the BTEC Construction course providing a solid foundation in the principles of construction and knowledge of the construction skills involved.

The BTEC Construction course leads to a nationally-recognised Level 3 Certificate and gives you a general grounding in the construction industry, with knowledge required by practically all of the construction trades.

You will learn about the construction industry from the ground up, starting with the design and planning process and exploring a range of traditional and modern construction methods. You'll learn about building techniques and construction materials, and about the science that underpins construction.

Your BTEC Construction course will explain how utilities are integrated into buildings and about the importance of health and safety in construction.

When your course is complete you will have the knowledge you need to start a range of jobs in construction at trainee level or to progress to further study so that you can enter the construction industry at a higher level.

Assessments are a great way of checking your progress. During your BTEC Construction course, you'll complete three assessments.

Each assignment question may ask you to either write a short report or information leaflet or draw a diagram. Study the grading criteria for each assessment prior to completion to ascertain what is required for each paper.

Generally, assessments can be sent to us online via the ICS Student Community: it's the fastest way to receive your results.

Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction and the Built Environment

In this first unit, you will investigate common accidents and dangerous occurrences and how to report an accident. You will also explore the importance of planning for health and safety and the consequences of technical, engineering and human failures for themselves and others. Throughout the unit, you will become familiar with enforcement routes for breaches of health and safety including prosecution costs and fines.

Science and Materials in Construction and the Built Environment

Two important functions of a building are to provide shelter and create a comfortable space in which to live or work. To achieve this, it is necessary to know about and understand the materials used to construct a building, the basic concepts that underpin the structural integrity of the building, and the design of the building's internal spaces.

The occupants of a building require a comfortable internal environment and there are several key factors that contribute to this. Therefore in this unit, you will discover all about the materials used in construction, and the science behind decisions made.

Construction in Civil Engineering

Infrastructure projects such as new roads, railways, airports and water projects all require the skills of the civil engineer. This final unit will give you an opportunity to understand the role of those responsible for these projects, and how projects are developed and achieved. On completion of your course, you'll receive the BTEC Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
