The subject is unitised in order to provide flexibility of operation and study.
Satisfactory completion of all sixteen units within this syllabus results in the award of 240 credits at HND level.
Each unit may be undertaken separately, and each will be assessed independently, however, it is a key requirement of the subject that all sixteen units attached to the syllabus be completed at a satisfactory level in order to achieve the HND.
Aims of the course

- To enable students to apply a range of transferrable skills to subject related topics, issues and situations.
- To facilitate and foster the development of a range of presentation skills relevant and appropriate to the discipline and level of study.
Course Objectives
- To encourage direct and indirect independent learning and the development of key skills in an effective and academic context for the purposes of personal development and progression.
- To develop an appreciation of the value and problems of interpretation of core concepts in Health and Social Care Studies, together with related and relevant practices, methodologies and theories.
- To build an understanding of the core concepts within Health and Social Care Studies in different situations and contexts

- To encourage students to develop study autonomy and be able to demonstrate planning, judgement and organisational skills.
- To advance the development of presentation skills appropriate to the discipline, level of study and delivery method.

COURSE ASSESSMENT
This HND subject is made up of a set of 16 units, which may be delivered and assessed independently. All units are assessed by coursework activities, and the compilation of an e-portfolio. The HND subject requires successful completion of all 16 units. Learners are able to complete units at a pace appropriate to their resources, commitments and study plans.
It is expected that a full set of subject units will be completed within 2 academic years of initial enrolment.
Credit is awarded for successful completion of each unit. Any units which are not successfully completed may be repeated but this is subject to the college’s discretion and criteria. All the learning outcomes attached to each unit must be met in order for credit to be awarded. Each unit attracts a total of 15 credits. Coursework is subject to marking criteria which will be outlines within each unit.
This course is delivered entirely via the distance learning route and therefore there is no face to face element or requirement for centre based assessment.

COURSE DURATION
We recommended you spend approximately 1200 hours of your time studying for the course name. The pace of study is completely up to you. To give an example, if you dedicate 12 hours a week to the course it would take you two years to complete but if you could spare 24 hours a week you could complete it in one year.

HOME STUDY COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
All students must be 17 years of age and above. Students should have completed a Level 3 Diploma or Professional Diploma or A level standard course (or equivalent) before the Level 5 qualification.
HE diplomas should be targeted at those learners who have the ability to benefit from the course and progress to Level 6. They should also have success at level 3. This is a prerequisite to undertaking the course, as is sufficient skills in English, Maths and ICT.
You have the freedom to start the course at any time and continue your studies at your own pace for a period of up to 24 months from initial registration with full tutor support.
The Edexcel BTEC Health & Social Care Studies HND course is divided into sixteen comprehensive units:
- What is care? Who cares and why?
- Students will be presented with the opportunity to learn about:
- ICT methods, tools and strategies
- The use of ICT in higher education
- Reflective writing and the use of this for skills enhancement
- The ePortfolio
- Defining care, care roles and care contexts.
- Illness and healthcare
- The importance of communication in care contexts
Students will be provided with learning opportunities in:
- Identifying different ICT methods relevant to Level 5 study
- Understanding how to apply different ICT tools and strategies within the course
- Gain understanding of value of independent study and be able to reflect upon experiences
- Define caring and carer
- Identify and evaluate theories related to care deliver, psychosocial issues and behaviourism within care and social contexts
- Understand the different roles within health and social care including professional, lay and voluntary; compare skills requirements, expectations and perceptions within these roles
- Understand care from a carer’s point of view and service user context
- Explore different barriers to effective communication and assess these in terms of care delivery and social contexts
- Explore the psychology of health and social care; how can care be a positive experience for service users?

- Social contexts and health: economics, environment and social inclusion
- Social diversity and how this impacts social care
- Behaviour and how this impacts social care and service delivery
- Eligibility criteria within social care: who gets what and why?
Health and social care contexts
Students will be presented with the opportunity to learn about:
- Care agencies, care environments, health promotion.
- Health and social care research: how important is this
- Historical origins of health research
Students will be provided with learning opportunities in:
- Health and social care research methodologies, methods and data interpretation
- Explore the historical origins of healthcare research, for example infectious disease data
- Explore how research is used in health and social care, for example public policy and provision of care
- Explore health promotion strategies, campaigns and delivery
- Look at different agency structures, roles and criteria for delivery
- Understand the different types of care environments and how the structure and delivery of care differs within each one; what skills are required for delivery of care within each environment?
- Discuss elements of safe practice and how this relates to different care environments and policy design
- Relevant legislation related to safe practice
Safe caring and care services
Students will be presented with the opportunity to learn about:
- What is acceptable care
- Data protection and confidentiality for service users.
- The future of care and care services in the UK
Students will be provided with learning opportunities in:
- Individuals receiving care have rights to confidentiality and must have their data protected: how is this achieved?
- Exploring the current legislation for client confidentiality and data protection in the UK
- Safe caring in relation to boundaries in personal and psychological care
- Explanation of national service frameworks and policy implementation within health and social care
- Looking at the future for care provision in the UK related to current and future legislative strategies and plans
